| | | General Discussion:David Foster - St. Elmo's Fire (1985) | | Last Post |
| | | | | | | | Posted: | Jan 6, 2013-3:59 AM | | | By: | First Breath(Member) | I saw the film for the first time yesterday. I was curious about how much score Foster actually wrote for the film, and if the soundtrack album could have featured more than the 2 score-tracks it has. First of all, the film of course featured lots of variations on the love theme. I guess an extended soundtrack album could have seen a few tracks with some of these variations. There was one really good unreleased score cue. It was first heard when Emilio Estevez stalks Andie MacDowell on the bike in the rain, and it was later heard again when Estevez drives in the car from MacDowell's cabin on the mountain. It's beyond me why this theme couldn't have been featured on the album, let's say as part of the Georgetown cue that runs for just 1:45. It starts here after 0:50: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHqodIVOqpA There was also a more suspense-based cue when Judd Nelson threatens Andrew McCarthy on the balcony towards the end of the film. Other than that, there really isn't much unreleased score material in the film. The track SAJE from Foster's 1986 solo album appears several times by the way. And then there is the One Love track, which is only on the Man In Motion 7" single B-side. An OK sax-based track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZQkggsatQs I would have loved to see an extended St. Elmo's Fire soundtrack release, like the new Top Gun soundtrack that was released many years ago. If this new release had featured the tracks I have mentioned in this thread, then it would be more or less complete. Fun for teens in the mid 80s I guess, but not for a grown man in 2013. :-D I beg to differ. I guess it has something to do with memories. If you saw the film and liked it in 85, chances are that you still like it now. | | | | | | | Posted: | Jan 8, 2013-10:50 AM | | | By: | Willgoldnewtonbarrygrusin(Member) | I agree that the film was not particularly good. I particularly like the Emilio Estevez-Andie MacDowell-subplot - a very poignant "unfulfilled love"-story. | | | | | | | | | | | | | Posted: | Jan 8, 2013-2:15 PM | | | By: | drivingmissdaisy(Member) | I love the film and appreciate it and the time, 1980's more and more. It's neat to see a film where the characters are talking and there isn't a cell phone in sight. I miss those days before we were all bottled down with a hundred different gadgets. David did some neat scores back in the day. Loved his Stealing Home score which has a few good cues on the soundtrack and a lovely song, And When She Danced. Pick that up if you liked St. Elmo's. Have any of you seen the incredibly heart wrenching St. Judes Hospital commercials with all the celebs in it? There is a GORGEOUS piano piece that is from Mr. Foster. Loved to have that out as an itunes release or something. The man sure can put out some great memorable tunes. | | | | | | | Posted: | Jan 9, 2013-9:53 AM | | | By: | First Breath(Member) | I've always enjoyed that theme very much on its own but have found it somewhat inappropriate film-wise. It has a loss of innocence/coming-of-age sound and yet the film concerns post-college graduates. I suppose a case could be made that they were, after all, trying to make their way in the "real world" after 4 years of the alternate reality of academia. Maybe that's why the sax's harder edge is the better of the instrumentation, for me. It has grit and a bluesy feel, better to underscore the pitfalls of young adulthood vs. classic adolescent angst. I find it great both on album and in the film. I haven't really analyzed why I like it though, LOL. It's just a great theme that is even featured on the end credits - peculiar given that the film had quite a few songs in it. There is even a music video for it (incredibly rare for score material), with Foster himself featured, and some totally random footage of some romance that has nothing to do with the film. I wonder why on earth the actors from the film are nowhere to be seen in the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blnXuYiY8Y0 | | | | | | | | | | Posted: | Jan 9, 2013-10:02 AM | | | By: | First Breath(Member) | David did some neat scores back in the day. Secret Of My Success also has some great cues, this one for instance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qEb8op6G00 I have most of the music Foster released under his own name, including the rare Love Lights The World and Eve. A pity he is no longer making music for himself. Do you have a link to that commercial? | | | | | | | Posted: | Jan 9, 2013-10:22 AM | | | By: | drivingmissdaisy(Member) | David did some neat scores back in the day. Here is a 57 second one with David's beautiful melody, take a listen. http://www.ispot.tv/ad/7Aow/st-jude-childrens-research-hospital-give-thanks You may want to pick up David Foster's album called The Symphony Sessions which has more of that sound we like all instrumentals. It has a great version of one of his themes from Secret of My Success on it. This is available on itunes. Great album by the way! | | | | | | | Posted: | Jan 9, 2013-11:06 AM | | | By: | 1980s(Member) | I saw the film for the first time yesterday. Hey First Breath, I'm totally on board with releasing this score in expanded form. I tried to bring up the subject about this, Stealing Home, and Secret of my Success. I'm glad that you thought to mention this! Anything that's by David Foster and is 1980s - cool man. If only we can get all the Harold Faltermeyer stuff (BH Cops, Fletches, Top Gun, etc) | | | | | | | Posted: | Jan 12, 2013-7:02 AM | | | By: | First Breath(Member) | David did some neat scores back in the day. I just wish I had the VHS too. | | | | | | General Discussion:David Foster - St. Elmo's Fire (1985) | | First Post |
